Facing a particularly critical hydrological situation, the Morzine-Avoriaz municipality is calling on everyone to help protect local water resources. From Saturday, August 1 through August 31, 2026, the Dranses watershed, which includes Morzine, has been placed under Crisis Level (Level 4/4) by the Haute-Savoie Prefecture, the highest level of drought restrictions.

This decision follows several weeks of below-average rainfall, which has led to a significant decline in river flows. The aim is to preserve drinking water supplies, protect natural ecosystems, and safeguard essential water uses.

Despite the severity of the drought (Crisis Level 4/4), Morzine’s public drinking water supply is not currently at risk in the short term. However, this reassuring situation should not diminish the need for a collective effort. The municipality may be called upon to support neighboring communities if conditions worsen, making every drop of water saved essential to protecting our mountain environment and its residents.

River Activities

UPDATE – Monday, August 3

Professionals offering water-based activities have obtained the necessary exemptions to operate water activities. Canyoning, rafting and hydrospeed are therefore authorised and are operating as normal.

Bike and Vehicle Washing Banned

The washing of bicycles and vehicles is now prohibited throughout the area for both private individuals and professionals, including accommodation providers, chalets, and ski lift operators. Only facilities supplied exclusively by harvested rainwater are permitted to operate.

Swimming Pools and Hot Tubs: Restrictions in Place

The filling and topping up of private swimming pools (chalets, residences, apartment buildings, etc.) and hot tubs is prohibited. However, public swimming pools and shared pools at hotels and campsites may carry out the minimum water top-ups required to comply with health and safety regulations.

Decorative Fountains and Water Features Shut Down

Decorative fountains and water features operating with an open water circuit, whether public or private, must be turned off in accordance with the orders issued by the Haute-Savoie Prefecture.

A collective effort is essential

Beyond the mandatory restrictions, the municipality encourages everyone to adopt a few simple water-saving habits:

  • Take shorter showers.
  • Avoid letting water run unnecessarily.
  • Postpone washing vehicles and equipment whenever possible.
  • Respect watering restrictions.
  • Report any water leaks on public property.

By working together, residents, visitors, and businesses can make a real difference in protecting this vital resource and preserving Morzine’s unique mountain environment.
