Congratulations and a round of applause are in order!
Morzine was one of the 34 towns awarded the ‘Tour de France Cycle City’ label.
The ‘Tour de France Cycle City’ label showcases local municipalities that are committed to encouraging the use of bicycles. In 2022, 28 towns applied for the label for the first time, and 6 of the 80 towns awarded the label in 2021, applied to have it renewed. All local municipalities that have hosted the Tour de France or the women’s Tour de France with Zwift at least once are eligible for the label, which then showcases everything that is done to encourage cycling in the area, whether this is through initiatives to encourage cycling as an everyday means of transport, as a leisure activity or at competition level.
This label is divided into four levels of certification that are indicated with little yellow bikes displayed on the signs that the local municipalities put at the entrance to the town or village. The classification criteria takes into account the size of the applicant town or city, the cycling infrastructure development strategy, concrete initiatives to encourage cycling (cycling proficiency at schools, awareness campaigns, organised rides, etc.) and any support given to local clubs and associations that are involved in cycling as a sport in their local area. Only major cities such as Paris, Copenhagen (Denmark) and Valkenburg (the Netherlands) have been awarded level four certification.
Morzine-Avoriaz was awarded level 3, as recognition of the level of investment in developing cycling as a sport, while also incorporating cycling as an aspect of everyday life in these two mountain resorts. Morzine-Avoriaz has been a traditional cycling destination for forty years now and has hosted the Tour de France twenty-one times, and as the resort is surrounded by twenty-five mountain passes, bicycle touring and sporty cycling have always been central to local development strategies. The town itself and a great number of its hotels and businesses have already been awarded the ‘Accueil Vélo’ classification, that recognises the services on offer for cyclists.
Besides road cycling, the resort also boasts marked-out MTB/electric MTB trails and a renowned MTB area. This is the biggest MTB area in Europe and there are charging stations dotted along the tracks, as well as some fun areas such as pumptracks. The resort is looking to develop all sorts of cycling disciplines. This classification rewards the incredible experience on offer here for all cyclists in search of the next destination for their cycling-themed holiday.
