In summer 2022, the Tour de France came to our destination! This was a fantastic experience for passionate cyclists and fans of Haute Savoie in general.

This marked 47 years since the Tour de France first came to Morzine. Since 1975, we have had the honour of welcoming cyclists to our beautiful village in Haute Savoie. Many a French champion has cycled through our valley, including Bernard Hinault, Thierry Claveyrolat and Richard Virenque.

The 2022 Tour de France departed from Copenhagen and we were proud to have been chosen to host the Tour de France teams for a rest day on Monday 11 July and then wave them off on Tuesday 12 July on their way towards Megève.

Let’s take a look back over the Morzine-Megève stage

This was the last stage in the Alps for the Tour de France 2022. Simon Geschke began with the polka dot jersey. 24 hours earlier, Magnus Cort had been wearing the polka dot jersey for 7 days in a row, before losing it in Châtel. During the stage, he positioned himself in a group of 25 cyclists.

Up the long final climb to Megève, the German cyclist had managed to stay in the second row, and then shattered any hopes that Luis Meon Sanchez may have had in the last kilometre. With just ten cyclists still in the running, it ended with a duel between Simon Geschke and Nick Schultz. They were practically neck-and-neck but it was Geschke who won his second ever stage of the Tour de France, after Carcassonne in 2018. He also won 6 stages of the Vuelta race. As for the other cyclists, Lennard Kämna ended on a frustrating note for the second time after the Super Planche des Belles Filles climb, and Tadej Pogacar cracked and lost ‘the yellow jersey that the German had been dreaming of in the final part of the stage’.

Morzine, the place to be!

The resort of Morzine-Avoriaz stands at an altitude of over 1,000 m and there are some great sightseeing routes in the area, including a part of the Route des Grandes Alpes. This magnificent 680-kilometre route between Lake Geneva and the Mediterranean passes via the greatest mountain passes of the Alps. You’ll find diverse itineraries suitable for all levels of ability. There are 16 mapped-out routes departing from the Tourist Office or town hall in Morzine. The routes are between 30 and 150 kilometres long, and are of varying difficulty.
