Well aware of climate change and the pressing need to change practices within the tourism industry, Morzine and Avoriaz have been working together for several months now on a project that is of particular importance to both resorts: the ‘Flocon Vert’ label.
This certification was introduced by the Mountain Riders association and had only been awarded to 8 other destinations before our destinations on the 9 September 2021, as a reward for their commitment to introducing concrete initiatives to protect the environment. Both resorts are looking to safeguard their exceptional Alpine environment through short and long term initiatives. Everyone involved in the mountains, local authorities, tourism professionals and holidaymakers are all encouraged to adopt good practices and do their part in limiting their carbon footprint as much as possible, as they continue to make the most of this authentic destination.
Working towards more sustainable mountain tourism
What is the ‘Flocon Vert’ label?
The ‘Flocon Vert’ label is awarded to mountain destinations that adopt a sustainable approach to environmental and social matters. Governance, transport, energy, urban development, water, waste, social, territorial… everything was analysed to pinpoint the destinations that stand out in terms of their approach to the ecological transition. This label means that tourist destinations that are working hard to protect the environment are showcased, and tourists wanting to come to the mountains can easily see which destinations are exemplary in their approach.
Some examples of initiatives rolled out by the destination
A leading destination in terms of active mobility
So that everyone can enjoy the atmosphere in the centre of the village, the local council decided to turn it into a pedestrian-only zone. This was trialled in the summer of 2021. Raising awareness among the general public is also a top priority for the resort and they are doing this with the introduction of a free shuttle service and partnerships with SnowCarbon and TicTacTrip. Finally, the resort has 2 public electric charging terminals and 8 others at various establishments throughout the resort.
A perfect destination for families
Thanks to the ‘Famille Plus’ certification, Morzine is doing more and more to increase awareness, including summer activities with local guides (botany walks, learning about the trees by climbing them, creative workshops on the themes of plants and wood), the ‘discover the mountains’ weekly outings in partnership with the Geopark, and activities on Nyon plateau on the theme of transhumance and life in the pastures. In winter, the resort also offers the possibility of exploring the Geopark with the ‘Odyssée des Mines d’Or’ activity.
An urban development policy serving as a reference
Morzine has managed to preserve the authentic style of a Haute-Savoie village, providing visitors will a truly authentic mountain experience!
The village owes its charm to the way it has safeguarded traditional expertise, heritage and architecture with slate roofs, nestled in amongst the fir trees. The slate mines transformed the economy and architecture of Morzine, and today this is one of the last remaining places in France where slate mines are still in operation.
There are several other projects in the pipeline
Showcasing and communicating on sustainable practices of local shop owners and craftspeople;
– An energy diagnosis on municipal buildings;
– Discussions with the local councils on organic waste treatment methods;
– Project and discussions about introducing a greenway route between Morzine and Les Gets;
– Support for the Montagne Verte association’s plans to introduce a railway route
