The impact of tourism on the environment is a major concern for Morzine and its stakeholders. That’s why Morzine is moving towards a more responsible approach and sustainable tourism. Local professionals are taking concrete actions to minimize the impact of winter sports on the environment. Eco-conscious vacationers increasingly appreciate this collective effort to preserve this exceptional alpine site. Committed to the Flocon Vert initiative and certified since 2021, the Town Hall, Tourist Offices, and lift companies work together with local stakeholders on short- and long-term projects to reduce the impact of our activities on the environment. We aim to preserve our unique natural surroundings as much as possible to continue providing an exceptional living environment for our residents and visitors.

Manifesto and Governance

Our ambition is to preserve our exceptional natural environment to continue offering a unique living experience for our residents and visitors. Mountain destinations are on the front lines in facing climate change and the exploitation of natural resources. Therefore, we must act before it’s too late! The Morzine destination has begun by assessing the current situation to establish strategies and action plans for the short, medium, and long term.

Morzine-Avoriaz, along with its tourist offices, lift companies, and the municipality, is in the process of completing its carbon footprint assessment.

This is a joint effort involving various economic and public stakeholders in Morzine. To successfully implement these actions, steering committees and working groups have been established: Creation of a Flocon Vert steering committee and various working groups (water, energy efficiency, engaged stakeholders charter, etc.). Development of a territorial strategy and action plan. Formation of an Ecological Transition working group within the urban planning commission. Neighborhood meetings to consult residents. Collaboration with the children’s municipal council for a waste awareness campaign. Our ambition is to preserve the exceptional environment of Morzine. In this regard, we wish to move forward with determination and energy.

Mobility & Transport

The pedestrianization of part of Morzine’s center has been in place since 2022, along with a system of free shuttles implemented during the summer and winter seasons to encourage tourists and locals to leave their cars at home! (Recent improvements include optimizing routes and implementing a shuttle geolocation information system). The municipality of Morzine continues to work on active mobility. A new bike path in the center of Morzine was established in the summer of 2023, with plans to expand and improve cycling paths in the future. New bike parking facilities are being added to accommodate the increasing number of cyclists in Morzine. A new charging station for electric bikes has been installed at the Tourist Office and at the top of Pléney. The village is classified as a “Bike-Friendly Destination” and a “Bike City” due to the numerous adapted services (routes, maintenance, facilities, etc.). Electric vehicles are used within technical services (small vehicles for watering, garbage collection, etc.). Two new charging stations for electric cars have been installed (one at the Tourist Office and another at the Sports Palace). Morzine participates in the Savoir Rouler à Vélo (SRAV) program, which provides children with the necessary skills for true cycling autonomy. In 2023, 127 children were trained. The village also participates in the mobility challenge: “May by Bike.” The municipality provides assistance for residents purchasing bicycles.

Getting to Morzine

The most significant impact of vacations comes from travel to the resort, accounting for approximately 50 to 70% of the emissions of an average ski trip. The leaders of Morzine and local businesses have sought ways to encourage more visitors to adopt low-carbon travel options, such as Go-Morzine-Avoriaz, a travel planner that encourages choosing the lowest carbon route to the destination.

AlpinExpress Pass: Travelers arriving by train benefit from discounts at several establishments in the resort (accommodation, rentals, ski passes, etc.). A 10% discount on the Morzine-Les Gets ski pass for 3 to 12 days is offered to customers arriving by train. A discount code is provided by the Montagne Verte association.

In 2020, French ski resorts collectively signed a pact of eco-commitments with the aim of progressively decarbonizing to achieve zero emissions by 2037.

The ski areas of Morzine and Avoriaz have equipped themselves with new, less polluting groomers. These machines operate on eco-friendly polar GTL fuel, which is biodegradable and non-toxic, replacing traditional winter GNR fuel. They are quieter and consume less fuel. The groomers are equipped with the Snowsat system, which provides ultra-precise measurements of snow depth.

This data is accessible to the operator in real time and serves as a basis for better distributing volumes of natural snow, ensuring that only the minimum necessary amount of artificial snow is produced. Snowsat also records the energy consumption of the groomers. This consumption has been reduced thanks to training for drivers in eco-driving techniques and optimal maintenance of the machines.

The Summit association, which promotes eco-responsible behaviors, has partnered with the ski resort to create a poster and a campaign to raise awareness about the best ways to protect the environment on the slopes.

In collaboration with the ONF (National Forest Office), each tree cut down in the ski area is recorded (number of trees, volume, etc.). Compensatory measures are implemented, and trees are replanted in areas of Chablais that need them, using local species such as spruce, fir, and larch. In total, 46 tree protection measures were established in 2020. For all earthworks carried out, reseeding is systematically implemented with local seeds, particularly for the Grizzli slope and the Pointe de Nyon.

Photovoltaic panels were installed at the arrival of the Proclou chairlift in 2021 and at the new Lac Intrets chairlift in 2023. For Proclou, 41 meters of panels were installed, with an expected production of 9,000 kWh per year, which will be self-consumed to operate the chairlift and reduce electricity consumption. For Lac Intrets, an expected annual production of 63,600 kWh will be generated, with an estimated self-consumption rate of 90%.

Biodiversity and Nature

Morzine-Avoriaz benefits from the Chablais Geopark label. It includes a Natura 2000 area and several wetland zones. PEFC Certification: In 2021, the municipality obtained PEFC certification (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification), which guarantees sustainable management practices for wood and forests. The PEFC standards focus on:

  1. Sustainable Forest Management: Ensuring the longevity and renewal of forests through natural regeneration or planting, preserving future trees, and promoting species diversity.
  2. Wood Resources and Biodiversity: Respecting animal and plant species, their habitats, and reproductive cycles, particularly through the conservation of dead or old trees, the prohibition of GMOs in forests, and the preservation of forest ponds/wetlands, which also contribute to maintaining forest balance.
  3. Quality of Work in Forests.

0% Pesticides: The municipality has committed to a sustainable management approach for green spaces. The movement initiated in recent years has led to a current zero use of pesticides (Zero Phyto). For example, moss treatment is performed using steam burning, manual weeding is prioritized, and certain areas are treated less frequently. The goal also includes implementing differentiated management to limit energy and water consumption, while further preserving wildlife and biodiversity.

Differentiated Management to Limit Energy and Water Consumption
Eco-grazing in the municipality. A ski area that becomes a biotope observatory! Studies on skier attendance are conducted in the Morzine ski area to identify protected zones for mountain galliformes, such as the Western Capercaillie. These analyses have allowed the identification of favorable and unfavorable zones. The area currently has two protected zones: Lake Joux Plane and Col de Joux Plane. Work has been carried out (clearing, etc.) to make the environment more conducive to the development of these species. In 2019, these works, which cost €20,000, were funded 50% by the Pleney ski lift company and 50% by the Haute-Savoie hunting federation.

A multi-year plan for visualizing dangerous aerial cables for birds in mountainous areas has been signed between the SA PLENEY (Morzine ski and leisure area) and the Mountain Galliformes Observatory. The cable cars are equipped with visual markers, placed approximately every 5 meters along sections identified as potentially hazardous.

Reasoned Use of Salt in Winter and Pumice on Roads: The municipality employs effective weather services to forecast salting periods.

The Eagles of Lake Geneva: Reintroduction of the white-tailed eagle. Located on the Nyon plateau in Morzine, Jacques-Olivier Travers has come to train his captive-bred raptors to fly and live in the wild. His shows raise awareness about mountain birds and help fund a significant reintroduction program for a threatened species that has been extinct in our region since 1892. In 2022, six young raptors were released in the area, with additional releases planned over the next eight years, along with studies to continue developing and improving the program. More info HERE.

A Few Eco-Friendly Gestures to Adopt in the Mountains: Come by train, Leave flowers in nature, Stay on designated trails, Use reusable water bottles instead of plastic ones, Pick up litter, Consume locally…

Natural Resources

Water: The town hall funds the purchase of rainwater harvesting systems for residents. Plans and studies are underway to clean and use pool water for watering flowers in the summer and to collect rainwater from municipal buildings.

Waste: Legislation requires that all individuals and businesses have a practical solution for sorting their organic waste at the source by 2024. The local association Montagne Verte has implemented a system for collecting organic waste from local restaurants and hotels since the summer of 2023. Waste is collected by electric bicycle with a trailer and transported for local processing.

Collection Points: The collection and treatment of waste in our municipality are managed by the Haut-Chablais Community of Communes (CCHC).

Waste Collection: The collection of household waste, recyclable packaging, and recyclable glass is carried out at Voluntary Drop-off Points (VDP), equipped with semi-buried containers. Morzine has 25 Voluntary Drop-off Points and 107 semi-buried containers.

Waste Sorting: A new recycling system for office waste has been implemented since October 2023 in all municipal buildings, and cigarette butt recycling points will be installed in the village starting January 2024. Two cleanliness days are organized in Morzine and Avoriaz at the end of the winter season as part of the zero waste mountain program led by Mountain Riders.

Energy: Gradual transformation of municipal lighting. Reduction of nighttime lighting depending on the areas. Systematic replacement of lighting with less energy-consuming systems (LED). Energy renovation diagnostics of municipal buildings, along with long-term planning for gradual improvement and insulation of these buildings. Elimination of certain printed guides and reduction of printing quantities to optimize waste. Municipal buildings are heated with a wood boiler that supplies a heating network, using local suppliers (Rhône Alpes) for wood chips.

A modern memory museum has been created, featuring interactive and playful elements, including a workshop room, exhibition hall, and a ballroom or performance space.

MORZINE AVORIAZ DISCOVERY – A new interactive heritage trail created in the summer of 2023. There are 6 points of interest in Morzine and 6 in Avoriaz, complete with QR codes to explore the history and view photos from years gone by. The GéOdyssée app: The Morzine Tourist Office has launched a free virtual treasure hunt to discover the village and its heritage in an interactive way.

Flocon Vert

Fully aware of the climate emergency and the immediate need to change tourism habits, Morzine and Avoriaz have worked on a project that is particularly important to them: the Green Snowflake label.

This distinction, conceived by the Mountain Riders association, was previously awarded to only 8 other destinations as of September 9, 2021, and reflects their commitment to implementing concrete actions in favor of the environment. Since then, other resorts have joined the initiative, and by 2023, there were 22 labeled resorts.

The Green Snowflake label guarantees the sustainable commitment of mountain destinations concerning environmental and social issues. Governance, transportation, energy, development, water, waste, social matters, and territories are all scrutinized to identify regions with cutting-edge ecological transition policies. It allows tourist resorts that undertake strong and comprehensive actions to be recognized, while providing mountain lovers with a clear view of exemplary destinations.

Supported by the town hall and the tourist offices of Morzine and Avoriaz, this initiative brings together various mountain stakeholders: ski lifts, socio-professionals, and the Community of Communes of Haut-Chablais, who meet regularly to implement an action plan with a clear calendar and specific objectives. Far from representing an end in itself, obtaining the label constitutes a process of continuous improvement aimed at ensuring more sustainable tourism for our visitors while maintaining a balance between development, mountain protection, local economy, and the preservation of the territory’s attractiveness.

Several other projects are in the pipeline:

  • Improvement and insulation work following an energy assessment of municipal buildings.
  • Consideration of organic waste management with the community of communes.
  • A project and discussion on the establishment of a greenway between Morzine and Les Gets, led by the CCHC.
  • Development and enhancement of cultural offerings.

Discover all the actions taken in response to the 20 criteria of the Green Snowflake specifications on this page.

Our Labeled Businesses

Many economic stakeholders are committed to eco-responsible actions and the use of short supply chains. In the summer of 2023, a new charter was established by the Mountain Riders association to highlight and promote the businesses in the Green Snowflake resorts that go above and beyond. In 2023, 12 companies in Morzine-Avoriaz received this status, recognizing their efforts to make their businesses more sustainable.

Commitment to the Future

Sacrifices that allow us to move forward: no longer prospecting for distant markets. Our promotional actions are focused on nearby markets (France, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, Belgium, and the Netherlands). Extinguishing public lighting in certain areas. Vehicle access is restricted in part of the village to make it pedestrian-friendly.
